Piazzetta

la piazzetta di CapriThe "heart" of Capri is Piazza Umberto I: a small, closed-off square resembling a courtyard. Around the square there is the ''Torre dell'Orologio'', or Clock Tower, possibly the belltower of the old cathedral; the municipal offices (located in the former bishop's residence); a series of stores and cafes; and to the left, the San Stefano church. The piazza was probably part of the primitive inhabited area of Capri, as shown by a number of sections of wall made from limestone blocks. The blocks can be seen at the ends of the funicular terrace, having been integrated in the construction of houses and the medieval walls on the northeast side of town. Around the piazza is the medieval quarter, interesting for its history and layout and its network of small, winding alleys. The square of the Funicolar: pre-romana walls This is one of the few remains of the oldest fortifications in Capri; two phases of construction are visible - the oldest consists of a pseudo-polygonal structure, while the later phase used square blocks. In the past, they were a part of the line of houses on Via Longano; today they have been almost completely erased by the renovations and construction in the area. They are connected to the belltower and the town's gate adorned with arches and cross-vaults
